I noted yesterday that I was off on a car trip today. The poor wee dog was very confused this morning, as I was not adhering to my normal routine of coffee and a sit down (to wake up). Instead I was racing aroud throwing a few clothes in a bag, gathering up some Christmas shopping, not to mention going to the cowshed in my dressing gown to get a billy of milk, and leaving home bright and early to head south for a couple of days.
I dropped two (very excited) big girls off at Rainbows End for some fun with another grandparent and Christmas with the other side of their family.
Then I called into my niece's for a quick visit. While there I delivered a quilt I'd been wanting to get to her for a wee while.
A few years ago I made a cot quilt from Dad's old shirts. i intended it to be used and/or slept under by all his great-grandies in the coming years.
It's been well used by Xavier but it was time to hand it over to Brodie.
After a quick visit there, it was time to head down to Mum's.
It's always nice to come back to my childhood home...everything's so familiar, and there are lots of memories.
I always enjoy seeing the quilt I made Dad when he was sick, on one of the spare beds.
And I spied Pounce. ED made him for Dad years ago...she was possibly about 12. Dad (and the grandchildren) had some good fun with Pounce.
Up on the hutch in the living room is another soft toy made for Dad. I made this for him when the kids were little. He was a major Winnie the Pooh fan and it seemed only right I make it for him.
Of course Mum didn't miss out on the special gifts. My girls made this for her sewing room.
So cool to see these things still here...change for the sake of change does not happen in this house - and that is very comforting! And quite nice in this disposable world we seem to live in these days.
Everywhere around the house are Mum's embroideries. I'm sure I've shown some of them before but I can't fnd the post right now.
Here are just a couple of the many. She does a wide variety of techniqes, depending on what class she's attended.

'til next time,
Happy stitches
Such a sweet post. I agree things do not need to be changed constantly, sometimes tried and true wins out.
ReplyDeleteyour Mum's embroideries are so pretty. I agree too we do not not to change things constantly do we. I like a little change but I love what is always there it seems. You had a very busy day love all the quilts
ReplyDeleteWhat wonderful memories for you. Thank you for sharing.
ReplyDeleteThat is a great tradition you created to share the quilt you made of your Dad's shirts with all of his great-grandchildren.
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed seeing the sentimental pieces that caught your eye.
My Mom didn't change things up much, and I don't either. It was (and still is) my older sister that had the need to switch around the furniture and decor. I agree--it is comforting to go home and have it still feel like the home I remember.
A sweet post, Raewyn.
Beautiful memory quilts.
ReplyDeleteEnjoy your visits
Thank you for sharing some of your family treasures. Love the stuffed toys you have made over the years, sadly not one of my skills. And the cute little plaid cot quilt from recycled shirts is just wonderful, reusing the fabric and keeping it in the family.
ReplyDeleteWonderful, post Raewyn, so good to see the quilt you made from your Dads shirts going to the grandchildren. Lots of great memories at your Mums house, the quilt and toys are good to see. Enjoy your time with your Mum.
ReplyDeleteLovely post... have a great time there...
ReplyDeleteHugz
That photo of that sweet little fellow cuddled up in his new quilt . . . Well it just shows why we love to quilt. It's a way to give them a warm hug ever when we are miles away.
ReplyDeleteWhat a wonderful treasure to have made a quit from your Dad's old shirts.
