A touch of Orange

grab button for SoScrappy
Last weekend, I decided my sewing time would be scrappy time.
Orange is the colour for the Rainbow Scrap Challenge with Angela for February. I'd put away my January greens and went looking for Orange.
I really didn't think I would find many and wondered if I'd have enough to do any scrap sewing. It's not that I mind orange, it's brilliant for a pop of colour and contrast here and there but I don't think I've ever made anything that's had much orange in it.
Surprisingly though, I found this much orange! So many shades.....
When put next to each other, some looked more gold than orange, or more burnt than orange, etc, but then individually, they all (to me) passed the Orange test.

First of all I cut a few squares to use as the main colour in my Omigosh churndash blocks.

Then I pulled out my scrappy sprouts for the first time in a very long time. I'd really like to get this finished this year.
I made four more blocks.
And after some time trying to remember the 'clever way' I was doing the black stems, I joined them to a length of reds I'd made previously.
I squeezed all that I've done into an empty area on my design wall. There is the odd square I'm not so happy with (for example a cream that's too close to the yellows and the top pink block doesn't work terribly well for me.)
However I still think it's going to be pretty cool and hopefully, now that it's out, I'll continue to work on it.
[As a side note; I was looking at it the other day, thinking, I don't ever remember using that fabric, or this one over here, etc, when I remembered that some of the red, and green blocks were sent to me by Sue of Mother Patchwork. Haa, no wonder I didn't recognise them but it was a nice way to start my quilt.]

This year I decided to continue on with my 365 day blog, where I post a picture a day for the year. Yesterday I hit Day 50 so I'm pretty pleased about that. I enjoy having the excuse to take my camera out and about with me and noticing some of those things that I'm sometimes too busy to notice.
Northland (and other parts of the North Island) are suffering 'extreme dry' conditions at the moment and our farm is no exception.
I've taken both of these photos recently, that show how dry it's become, even since the last time I shared a farm photo at the end of January.
We're having to feed out to all the stock to keep them happy and healthy.

'til next time,
happy stitches,

  7. Well your stash sure had more orange scraps than mind did this year--but with the new purchases I can say I know have orange scraps too--and like you it was hard for me to work with them--but I put on a brave coat of armor and did work with them 2 times so far--and tomorrow or Saturday I still make some 'sister's' blocks with orange dresses at least 3 of them--then those orange fabrics are going into their bag and at the bottom of the scrap tote!!!! Wonder what next months color will be--and if I will have to go 'scrap' purchasing!! need some new cotton slacks--so need to go shopping for them next month not fabric!
have an awesome week--love those cows!!
    luv, di

  8. I hope you get rain soon! You have endured years of drought, then the fires and parts of Australia have received flooding rains! I hope your rains are gentle and allow the ground to absorb the moisture with no floods. You have a beautiful selection of oranges and your sprouts are fantastic!!

  9. They're all looking great--love the orange fabrics. Praying for rains for you all! I grew up on a farm and, though I loved it, I never liked our livelihood being so at the will of the elements & things you can't control. Seeing my dad put so much into it all--we had cattle & pigs, too--but knowing hail or freeze etc. could wipe it all out...well, I do understand the frustration. :o(

  14. The sprout blocks really show the value of contrast! In my experience, if you want to push the boundaries with your scraps... such as include multiple tones or values and have them still appear "as one", then you really need to limit the values and variety in your background. Having said that... this is one thing that i still struggle to achieve.

  16. I love orange, but I think it is often a hard color to find. You did well incorporating it into your two projects.
Wow--the dryness really shows in your photos. Hope you get moisture ASAP!

  17. I finally decided on my RSC block....I’m only doing one RSC project. I can’t keep up with as much as you do, which I don’t know how you do, considering how busy your life is. I’m certainly loving your orange blocks. I want to do sprouts one day. It’s 'on the list' 😉

  18. Love your 'churn dash' blocks! What size are they Raewyn? We've just been up at Mangawhai heads, all very very dry there. Coming home we ran into some much needed rain, did it reach up where you are too?

  22. Glad to see you did get your sprouts growing again!

Every time I see an OMG quilt I think I need to start one but never have. I just love that pattern. Good luck with yours.
