A finish or two for a baby or two

A goal for this month was to complete the baby quilt for a baby of a friend of both my girls.
This was a totally fun make and I'm so happy it's now ready to be delivered.
The close up below shows the quilting - straight lines in the light grey zig-zags, a 'meander with purpose' in the coloured zig-zags, a few bubbles for the fish and a seaweed-type design around the fish too.
I used *this* tutorial for the zig-zags rather than the usual method of making half square triangles and joining them. Because I used this stitch and flip method, there are a pile of triangles cut off which I sewed into bonus hst. My method used more fabric but I was ok with making myself a pile of scraps for another time!
I had a few bigger pieces of fabric left over which I joined for the binding —
I was happy with the effect —
I did have thoughts of doing a quick tutorial for the fish block if anyone wants to play with it? It's a simple fish which sews up quite quickly.
This was my One Monthly Goal which I signed up to over at Patty's Elm Street Quilts. When the link is open I'll be linking up - yaay, great to finish a goal ahead of time :-)
EDIT - The end of the month has come and I have linked up to Patty's OMG party *here* - thank you Patty :-)

Some of you will remember that I made a cute wee beanie for wee GS Odie recently. YD and I decided the pattern needed modifying to make it a better fit.
This version has K2P2 rib at the start and then the same amount of stocking stitch as before. No roll-up bottom edge which is cute but not so practical to wear. I did the same novel 3-stitch icord at the top (click *here* for a tutorial on this extremely cute and easy method).
It turned out just right - when Odie gets over his over-heating and the days and nights are cooler, it will be the perfect size for him.
And also on the 'making things for Odie' front, I made a couple of cot sheets for him. When I've seen wide suitable cottons on sale I've been getting some for this purpose. The ones I made ED have worn so well that I had no hesitation going with homemade again. I have some wide brushed cotton for winter sheets too, they'll be next on the list of random sewing (as opposed to quilting sewing!).
Posing with the sheets is a crochet sheep that came with a toy tractor. After an unfortunate encounter with a dog, Ganma needed to give him some new legs!

I feel good that I've got these things done - sewing days are few and far apart at the moment. I've still been pretty busy with family but have a sense that this will slow down somewhat as Covid-19 spreads further within New Zealand and we move from Alert level 2 to level 3 (from 'contained' to 'increasingly difficult to contain').
I'm hoping the rest of you are coping with these unsettling times.

'til next time
safe and happy stitches,

  1. The fish and waves quilt is stunning work, design and execution both.

We are staying at home as Pirate is 80 and has been through cancer treatment ( finished almost 5 years ago). Bikes on the turbo trainers.. don't want to risk him coming off/being knocked off...up and down stairs for walking and digging the garden for fresh air!
Stay safe and happy..you have plenty of work on the farm apart from anything else!

  4. I really like your "meander with a purpose" in the zig zags - I have a project I'm putting together and had planned straight lines in one path but was debating on the second path. Didn't want to do ribbon candy and I need to try stitching this out. THANKS!! Great baby quilt - I love scrappy bindings.

  8. What a cute cute baby quilt--love the design and the colors--
we are pretty much on 'shut in' state here-
but so far I have been outside and walking everyday--
they say the sunshine is very good for you plus for this virus--
and the weather here is finally perfect--
I do have to go out through the main lobby area though to get outside and to come back in--but the last two days hardly anyone else was around (we have over 165 tenants here--but some have went to stay with family until this is over--and hopefully some day it will be over!)
    take care--
    luv, di

  12. All your makes are gorgeous Raewyn. I did some baby sewing yesterday too - I was able to make everything from my stash. I read yesterday online that the Health authorities have all signed a petition to go immediately to Level 4 to try to contain this virus here in NZ. I must say - I can see their point. Take care Raewyn - keep crafting. xx

  16. I would love a tutorial for the fish block. I love this little ugly Raewyn! And the quilting is just perfect that ’meander with purpose’ is terrific. Wonderful finish. And your modified beanie iS so sweet. Thanks for the link to the icord which I may very well use as I am making myself a beanie right now!

  17. I would love a fish tutorial too please. Your baby quilt is wonderful, great quilting and binding. It will be a family treasure. The baby beanie is so cute, I am relieved you saved the sheep!! We are on shutdown tomorrow, cafes, pubs, fish and chip shops all business deemed non essential are to be closed, schools will be closed, I don't know where that leaves the health workers who have school aged children. Very happy to be at home at present. Keep safe Raewyn.

  19. Very cool desig for a baby quilt! Also allows a nice mix of restful blues and greens, as well as those pops of colour for the fish. And great quilting too! I really like the leaf quilt from your last post, it reminds me of a quilt styled on a bear rug...big and shaped, which was cute and I'll have to make one day 🐻

  23. Love the fish quilt.
it is a stressful time for all.
I think NZ is a bit more proactive than AU at the moment, we can only hope we get a vaccine and that this can be contained and fizzle out,
fortunately I have plenty of sewing supplies...LOL

  24. Gorgeous finish on your quilt. And lovely quilting to finish it off perfectly.
The little hat is so cute. Maybe Ted needs one, too. And I do feel for the poor sheep and its missing legs.
Yes, we are missing seeing family with our shutdown. Our GS had a birthday on Tuesday and we had to do it all on Skype. Sad not to be there but so grateful we could still join in.
