My quilting thoughts and inspirations sprinkled with a glimpse of life down on the farm

Blame it on the cows —

I had a gentle prod nag reminder about my neglected blog this week and it really is all the fault of the cows. And calves.
Feeding time. I have 70 to rear now.

However, moments of crafting are happening;
A few secret projects —
(it's fun having a daughter around who can show me how to play with Photoshop!)

I got back to one of my scrap projects over the weekend; I've renamed this one Honeypot Stars after finding out that my initial name of Honeybucket Stars did not always inspire sweet thoughts (just google it!). As I store all my scraps in the (empty) Honey Buckets we are given (full) as payment for having beehives on our property I had thought it was an apt name!
Anyway, here's the latest block.

Slowly the pile is growing. The blocks are 15" square so I don't need too
many for a decent sized quilt. Might go for 3x3 so I'm over half way there!
I'm realising that although I'm a scrappy lover, I also like the blocks to be a little co-ordinated, I'm not a 'close my eyes and grab a fabric' scrap sewer.
So they all get laid out and worked out before I sew. Slower but keeps me happy!
The start of a Honeypot star :-)
These stars are from the book S is for Scraps by Gayle Bong. I've talked about how they are made *here*. I was trying to keep up with the Rainbow Scrap Challenge colours each month but now I'm just happy to sew up my scraps when and how it suits.
For those of you following YD's knitting adventures, here (in the teal) is the latest jersey for her dog. Trying to get an exact fit for his body has been a challenge, but she's doing rather well considering this is only her 2nd project. Oh and she drafted out the bones and worked out how to knit them herself!
Although the weather has changed again, we have had some beautiful days lately. The photo below really brings out the warm fuzzies in me. And didn't I do well, I managed to capture a bee at work too!
It's back to the gumboots for now, but later on I'm hoping for a quiet and productive day in my sewing Palace. Wish me luck!
'til next time,
happy Stitches,

  1. sometimes the animals have to come first. In my case a flower bed that needs to be demolished has been taking time away from quilting and piecing Love what you have been working on though! time for us to get cooler in another month or so and so looking forward to it!

  3. I do like your Honeypot Stars, a bit like a log cabin around the outside. Like you, I like my blocks to be a little more ordered too - can't cope with anything goes scrappy, I don't think.

  8. Magnolias are just the best! I love the colours on the ?seed pod after the petals have all fallen, I collect them when I see them on the ground! What a lot of calves, no wonder you're so busy.

  10. Love your stars. I made ones which ended up 6" square for the RSC last year, but I used squares, not strips like yours. Really like how yours turn out. Once your babies grow up a bit, they won't be so much work for you.

  16. Your honeypot stars are looking great Raewyn. And your daughter is doing veerrry well with her knitting endeavours - good on her. Can imagine how those 4-legged creatures are time consuming, especially in this weather lately.

  17. So nice to see to see the happenings at your place!! The calves are looking good! Though I know they keep you busy!

I've been stitching, just not much blogging! We had about 2 months of really hot weather, so tried to do 10 hours work in the cool hours of the morn. The house stuff in the heat of the day, and then back out in the eve. We are cooler now and have had some rain! I'm tidying the garden for fall/winter, hand quilting a baby quilt, working dogs - I have five now! And working on the ranch. Oh yeah trying to trying to keep up on house work! A clean house is way over rated! LOL! Everyone will be here next weekend for the start of dove season and the goat cook off. Mikkie schedule a photographer for family photos, she thought with 15 of us we couldn't do it ourselves! News on the home front: Rygh and Lyn are expecting number two in February and Mollie is getting married in May! So another's baby quit, a wedding dress and a wedding quilt! Never a dull moment at this house!

    Great big hugs from Texas!

  18. Always love seeing new calves. Gosh must be nice getting full buckets of honey, I nearly died when I saw the price for a small pottle of plain brand honey at the supermarket the other day. I guess thats what happens with a shortage of honey bees. Happy sewing when you get the chance.

  22. I think you are definitely excused when considering how busy you are at this time of the year. I am surprised you are getting any sewing done. Love seeing the star blocks growing along.
Your daughter is doing a great job with the knitting.
    Love seeing the magnolia, too.
