Sew and sew

I had a really good 'lock myself in The Palace and sew' afternoon this week.
I lost myself in methodical and mindless chainsewing, trimming and piecing and after some time, I had completed the last of the hourglass blocks I needed for my Smidgeon quilt.
And I'd made a couple more 36-patch blocks - because I'd miscounted a few months ago!
This quilt travelled to Scrub Stitching with me, remained untouched while there, but came into its own while I was isolating downstairs after picking up Covid. All the MOML had to do was bring my sewing machine, iron and wool pressing mat down to the door. I had pins, thread, scissors etc, with me after my holiday so I was all set to sew!
I really needed one more day before I tested negative but I was a bit over the isolating by then!
This was where I was at, at that stage —
After my efforts this week, I have got all the rows pieced and just need to join them up.
Because the blocks are set on point, at times I had to double/triple think so that it made sense with all the setting triangles but I finally got there with the layout! It doesn't help that I don't have a design wall big enough to put it up on. I find the most convenient place to use is the spare bed - I can shut the door and leave it be, and no-one will walk on it!

Last week I made one more of the challenge blocks for The Country Yard 20 year Anniversary Challenge. Because the shop is set on a large property with lovely gardens, the next theme for the challenge was 'A Country Garden'.
The bird block design is by Irene Blanck. I can't double check right now but I think it was a block she gifted as part of the Splendid Sampler QAL a few years ago.

We have had some horrendous weather this week. Rain rain and more rain. There was some torrential and flash flooding type of rain on Wednesday, flooding and closing the roads, not just throughout Northland but over many regions in the North Island. As happens we were flooded in for the day, and as happens, the river that runs through the farm flooded good and proper.
About lunchtime-
And later in the day -
Luckily we have some areas we can use for the cows that are high and 'dry' -
The next day the water had drained off the pastures although the bridge was still not visible. Of course there will be another big clean up job.

Today I flew down to Mum's for the weekend. It will be a nice chance to catch up with some extended family and conveniently she lives not too far from where The Great NZ Quilt Show is being held this weekend!
'til next time,
happy stitches,

  1. Your Smidgeon quilt is beautiful! I hope it won't take too long to clean up after the flood and hopefully the milkman can get through ok. Happy stitching!

  3. lot of water! our place doesn't get that much but at times there is a lot of water in the low areas. Glad you are now over covid - did the friend that travel with you get it or any of your family? I was dreading possibly getting it from going to the quilt show but two weeks in the past now and neither of us got it. Love that border with the patchwork.

  4. That is a stunner..but something like that needs uninterrupted concentration!!

Sad to see flooding again..and in many places the last cleanup is still ongoing

  5. Fun to have some time to just 'sew'--and I am also doing a quilt on point and it does make one really think about how to sew it all together--and I also do not have a design wall--I also just use my bed for layout and it's just a twin bed--but I have to pick it all up at night--gotta sleep in the bed!!
have a nice visit with Mom--and fun at the quilt show-
    hugs, di

  6. More flooding, it must seems to go on and on. Luckily we have not been affected down here. You've done such a lot of work to get your top completed, well done.

  7. You guys up North have had it wet, wet, wet. I do hope we see some photos from the show. Enjoy. Your quilt top looks fantastic, I hear you on the lack of design wall.

  9. Gosh Raewyn you achieved heaps in your isolation period. I had always thought that if I ever caught Covid I would happily craft away but it just seemed to totally flatten me & I could not pick up a needle or thread. Plus The Mr caught it from me as our house is too small to properly isolate. I am in awe of what you achieved. Yes the rain has been dreadful hasn't it. I just made it back from Mums before the Awakino slip & road closure. Enjoy your time with your Mum. xx

  10. Well one good thing is it sounds like your bout of Covid wasn’t too bad if you could sew and sew! Wow that quilt is shaping up great. Yay for higher ground. In Ontario where I live, and well, the eastern half of Canada and the US, we’ve had nothing but rain and cold temps (can barely get out of the teens) while here at my daughter’s in Alberta, the west, they are parched and about to go into another heatwave, which is so abnormal for them and terrible because of all the forest fires, 20+ of which are out of control…

  11. What a coincidence you visiting Mum at the same time as a quilt show!!
Your Smidgeon is looking great - will it have a border? I love the little bird in a heart, very cute.
We had torrential rain last Tuesday. Fortunately we do not flood but lots of villages in the area had severe flash flooding. At least your house is away from the floods, it must be awful having to clean up indoors. Have a nice weekend. xx

  12. Love Smidgeon. A great design and a user of scraps. Win/win!
Wow, you have flooding worse than we have right now with our record mountain snowpack melting and swelling our rivers over their banks.
Such a happy coincidence to have a visit with Mum and a quilt show together. ;)

  13. Your quilt is looking great - it was convenient that you hd "downstairs" to isolate in.
The change in the water level in such a short time is remarkable...glad the cows could go higher up.
and as Janet said "Such a happy coincidence to have a visit with Mum and a quilt show together"

  20. Smidgeon is looking fabulous. It’s amazing what can be achieved with dedicated sewing time. A positive from your isolation. The blue borders tie everything together so well. I can’t believe how much flooding you are getting….. just as it appears we are headed for another dry spell.
